Radiology professionals gather at IU Kokomo

November 2, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—Close to 100 members of the Indiana Society of Radiologic Technologists are expected to visit Indiana University Kokomo on November 4, for the District 4 annual conference. Students in IU Kokomo’s Radiography program and Medical Imaging Club have been actively involved in conference planning and will assist with registration and other details on November 4.

Medical Imaging Club President Teri Hamm of Peru said she and the other students were happy to be involved. “It gives us the opportunity to get a taste of other aspects and changes occurring in the field of medical imaging,” Hamm said. “Medical imaging changes continually and it is our responsibility as professionals to keep up to date. By organizing and attending this type of event, the students gain team experience and knowledge from the speakers.”

A public and alumni relations officer for the club Diana Mishler of Kokomo said students gathered door prizes, prepared gift bags for the conference attendees, and handled other arrangements. “As a class, we have given [Assistant Professor of Radiography] Heidi Thomason some feedback regarding speakers. It’s been exciting,” Mishler said. Working on the conference has been great way to expand on the education that I am receiving in both the didactic and clinical settings. The speakers are usually very informative and have perspectives and experience that I can draw from as I start to think about getting ready for my own career.”

Other Medical Imaging Club officers for 2006–2007 include
Trish Davis, Vice President, Logansport
Lyndsay Adams, Secretary, Kokomo
Breanna Delph, Treasurer, Kokomo
Angie Hill, Fundraising/Community Service, Logansport
Shelby Rollins, Public Relations/Alumni Relations, Logansport
Amanda Troyer, Junior Officer, Twelve Mile
Andrea Gunter, Junior Officer, Logansport

Heidi Thomason, B.S.R.T.(R.), (C.T.), is the club’s faculty advisor.

The conference helps kick off National Radiologic Technology Week, observed November 5–11. IU Kokomo students have prepared posters to be displayed on campus, highlighting aspects of the profession and the week’s theme “Seeing More Than Meets the Eye.”

IU Kokomo faculty members Gary Randle, M.S., R.T.(R.) and John Hughey, M.S., R.T.(R.), will present the two opening lectures of the conference program. Randle’s topic is “Do People know you are a Professional?”. Hughey will speak on “Radiation Safety. Lou Thomason, a registered financial consultant from Peru, will address business aspects of the radiologic profession, in a talk, “Advanced Communications.”
