‘Celebrate’ the season in song at IUK Singers concert

November 20, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—The IUK Singers will “Celebrate” glorious music from the holidays, Broadway, and Mozart in their annual Winter Concert, scheduled Friday, December 1. The 7 p.m. concert will be held in Havens Auditorium on the Indiana University Kokomo campus. Admission is free and open to the public.

“We are calling our concert ‘Celebrate’ because we are celebrating so many musical inspirations,” said faculty advisor Cindy Ison. Chief among the causes for festive mood is the 250th anniversary of the birth of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The IUK Singers will pay tribute by performing “Ave Verum Corpus,” “Alleluia!” and “Lacrimosa” from Mozart’s Requiem Mass. Kayla Truman will serve as soloist on the Clarinet Concerto.

The choir will present highlights from the musical Wicked and celebrate cultural heritage with the Negro spiritual “Soon Ah Will Be Done” and a Jewish folksong “Ma Navu” (“How Beautiful”).

Several songs of the holiday season are on the program, such as “Still A Bach Lullaby,” “Christ Came to Bethlehem,” “What a Wonderful Child” with soloist Kelly Herrera. and “Eight Nights, Eight Lights.” This last song, which recounts the story of Hanukkah, will be performed by an all-male chorus.

IU Kokomo’s SingSationz show choir will dance and sing to selections from Grease. The women of SingSationz will perform “Santa Baby,” and the men of SingSationz will offer “But, Baby. It’s Cold Outside.”

Student accompanists for the program include David Stout (drums), Aaron Pitzer (French horn and bass guitar), and Debbie Bricker and Brittani Wells (flute). David Brittain is conductor.

Donations of non-perishable food items for the Crisis Center will be accepted at the entrance to the concert.
