IU Kokomo Freshmen Learning Communities to Welcome Roya Hakakian, Former Iranian Citizen and Highly Acclaimed Author

November 2, 2007

KOKOMO, IN—This year, the freshman learning community has once more incorporated into its curriculum a common reading program as part of their effort to create a classroom environment, which embraces diversity, explores global issues, and prepares students to see life from a different point of view. Each year the faculty chooses a book based on its contemporary and newsworthy focus as well as its interesting and unique perspective. The focus of last year’s book, Enrique’s Journey, was immigration and included a visit from the author. This year highly acclaimed award-winning book is Journey from the Land of No: A Girlhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran by Roya Hakakian, celebrated author and former Iranian citizen. Hakakian has accepted the freshman learning community’s invitation to speak at Indiana University Kokomo, Monday, November 12, 2007 from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Hakakian’s book tells the story of her life as an Iranian Jew and the changes that took place during her childhood in the period of time leading up to the 1979 revolution. While she is here, Hakakian will be interacting with the students of the freshman learning communities, and expanding on their understanding of the reading in order to add another dimension to the overall learning experience.
