Students to participate in undergraduate research conference at Indiana University Kokomo
November 13, 2008
Kokomo, Indiana – Research for any given subject takes time and dedication. Students at Indiana University Kokomo will have an opportunity to share their research and practice their speaking skills in front of other students from around the state at the upcoming IU Undergraduate Research Conference.
The 14th annual event, which rotates each year to IU campuses statewide, will take place Friday, Nov. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the IU Kokomo Kelley Student Center and in the Main Building. More than 20 students from the Kokomo campus will give presentations and more than 70 are expected to attend overall.
“The conference both celebrates the accomplishments of some of our most talented, thoughtful, and intrepid students, and gives them a foretaste of what they might experience in their future professional lives,” said Robert Strikwerda, associate professor of philosophy and director of the honors program. “They work very hard, they tackle substantial projects, going beyond what is expected in typical assignments, and it is rewarding to give them an opportunity to show what they have accomplished.”
Students will participate in round-table discussions, the presentation of papers, and in poster sessions, according to Kathryn Holcomb, associate professor of psychology and director of the Center for Research and Creative Activity. The keynote speaker will be Christian Chauret, chair of Natural, Information, and Mathematical Sciences at IU Kokomo.
The Indiana University Undergraduate Research Conference (IUURC) is dedicated to the promotion of undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative activity performed in partnership with faculty or other mentors as a vital component of undergraduate education at IU. The conference is open to all disciplines: visual and performing arts, humanities, natural and physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, business, economics, education, and nursing.
