Learn about effects of alcohol October 21

October 17, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week is October 19-25.

During the week, college students are encouraged to consider how drinking might affect their health and safety.

IU Kokomo joins the effort on Tuesday, October 21, with several activities open to the campus and community. Activities taking place in Room 130 of the Kelley Student Center include:

8:30 a.m.
• Join a discussion on the effects of alcohol in the lives of students

11:30 a.m.
• Enjoy free mocktails (non-alcoholic drinks)

8:30 a.m.–2 p.m.
• Try on “drunken” goggles, to experience the effects alcohol consumption on vision
• Receive a pledge cup for signing a pledge to refrain from drinking and driving (Cups donated by Umoja.)
• Pick up a “Blood Alcohol Educator” CD-ROM

Reeta Piirala-Skoglund, a finance and economics major who works in the IU Kokomo Office of Campus Climate, secured a $295 grant from the organization Indiana Campus Compact to underwrite the alcohol awareness activities. “Some people on campus have personal experiences with the misuse of alcohol [by others] affecting their lives. That’s what the 8:30 a.m. discussion will cover,” she said.

“But, it’s not all serious. We’re doing fun stuff, too, giving people alternatives,” she added. “The pledge students will be asked to sign doesn’t say ‘I won’t drink.’ It says, ‘I won’t drink and drive.’ ”
