Green heads Arts Alliance Indiana, directs conference workshop with Ison

October 17, 2003

KOKOMO, Ind.—IU Kokomo Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Stuart Green, M.F.A., will assume the presidency of Arts Alliance Indiana (AAI), October 24, during the 4th Annual Indiana Community Arts Conference in Indianapolis. The October 23–24 conference is jointly sponsored by AAI and Indiana Advocates for the Arts, nonprofit organizations providing professional and organizational development and political action services to Indiana artists, arts organizations and other arts providers.

On October 23, Green and IU Kokomo Lecturer in Music Cindy Ison, M.S., will direct a “creativity session,” during which conference participants will assume roles and sing duets from Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. The workshop is modeled on class exercises Ison and Green developed for the IU Kokomo course, “Introduction to the Creative Arts,” which they team-teach along with Associate Professor of Communication Arts Colin Black, M.F.A.

Minda Douglas, M.F.A., director of the IU Kokomo Art Gallery, assisted with conference planning and has donated artwork for a silent auction held during the gathering.

Titled “MAKING MEANING: Artistic Journeys in Ourselves, Our Work and Our Communities,” the conference also offers creativity sessions in painting and movement, guided tours of four Indianapolis cultural districts, and several skill-building workshops. Session topics include “Changing Trends in Corporate and Foundation Giving,” “Arts Education Partnerships,” “Tending the Creative Flame,” “Arts Advocacy Updates and Lobbying Tools,” “Connecting with Core Values to Avoid Burnout,” “Making Cultural Districts a Reality” and “Using Board Members Effectively in the Fund Raising Process.”

Speakers include Robert Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, and Jonathan Katz, president and CEO of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies.

The Indiana Governor’s Arts Awards ceremony, honoring Indiana’s master artists and leading art patrons, will take place at the conference luncheon on October 23. A special Governor’s Arts Award will be presented to former first lady Judy O’Bannon and posthumously to Governor Frank O’Bannon.

Logansport artist and educator Teri Partridge will receive an Indiana Community Arts Leadership Award, during the October 24 conference luncheon. Other award winners include arts administrator Ramona Baker, Indianapolis; community volunteer and arts educator Karen Chilman, Commiskey; and artist and activist Ann Johnson, a.k.a. FB Fogg, Muncie.

The conference is presented in part with a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, with funds from the Indiana General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Advance two-day registration fees begin at $195. Luncheon-only, single-day and on-site registrations also available. A limited number of registration scholarships are available to eligible individuals. For additional information, contact Joyce L.
