‘Move to the Beat’ at International Day Festival

KOKOMO, Ind.—Following the theme, “Move to the Beat of the World,” visitors to IU Kokomo’s 11th annual International Day Festival will be dancing to and with musical performers representing numerous continents. Set November 15 11 a.m.–3 p.m. in Kelley Student Center, the festival also offers samples of foreign cuisine, an international market, and displays of cultural artifacts from various countries. Admission and parking are free. The Prince Julius Drums of West Africa will return for their ninth performance at IU Kokomo International Day Festival. Other performers include:
• Indianapolis Minyo Dancers, a group dedicated to the advancement of Japanese folk and traditional dance Foods of Japan, West Africa, India and Germany, as well as vegetarian dishes, can be purchased in the Kelley Student Center Commons. Meat, vegetables, rice and desserts will be available; prices will vary from $1 to $2.50. In the international market, Shabira Virgie will offer henna hand painting. In this ancient Middle Eastern beauty treatment, intricate designs are drawn on the skin with a temporary plant dye. Other market vendors, including One World Handcrafts, Inc. and the International Student Organization, will sell arts and crafts from numerous global sites. The student Psychology Club will offer a silent auction of donated goods. As part of the cultural displays, IU Kokomo Professor of Chemistry Kasem K. Kasem, Ph.D., will exhibit items from his native country, Egypt. Other displays are planned by the International Women of Kokomo, the Chinese Association of Kokomo, the Vietnamese Association of Kokomo, El Mundo Hispano (highlighting Mexican culture) and Professor Emeritus Herbert Miller, Ph.D. The International Day Festival is jointly coordinated by the International Student Organization, Umoja, El Mundo Hispano, the Office of Campus Climate, AVI Food Services and the IU Kokomo Art Gallery. Information will be available throughout the week on Indiana University’s numerous study abroad programs. Highlighting the week is a visit to IU Kokomo by African American poet and essayist Nikki Giovanni. Growing out of the civil rights and black arts movements of the ’60s, Giovanni’s work connects literature with politics, calling for a revolutionary interpretation of experience through a black consciousness. She has also spoken out on women’s and family issues.
