  Education honorary welcomes seven new members

This release mentions residents of FOREST, GREENTOWN, KOKOMO, LAFAYETTE, LOGANSPORT, NOBLESVILLE, PERU AND UPLAND.

KOKOMO, Ind.—The 140 members of Gamma Gamma Chapter, Pi Lambda Theta (PTL) education honor society, welcomed seven new members on October 2 at IU Kokomo. Newly inducted student members, listed by their academic programs, are:

Master of Secondary Education

• Amy Parraga, coordinator of the 21st Century Program at IU Kokomo

• Jessica Walker, Forest

Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education

• Audrey Cunningham-Wunderlich, Kokomo

• Casey Washam, Greentown

Secondary Social Studies Certification

• Dr. Michael Hickman, Lafayette

• Stephanie Shaffer-Gilbert, Noblesville

Assistant Professor in Education Shirley Aamidor, Ph.D., was also inducted. Chapter President Ann Taylor, Vice President Lora Reed and Faculty Advisor Charlotte Miller presided at the ceremony.

On September 16, Gamma Gamma recognized education students with merit awards at a scholarship reception. Honorees included:

• Christina McQueary, Kokomo, recipient of the Cabot Scholarship

• Candy Mooney, Peru, recipient of the Pi Lambda Theta Patricia Wood Student Teaching Scholarship

• Lindsey Boles, Kokomo, recipient of the Kay Plew Memorial Student Teaching Scholarship

• Kimberly Campbell, Upland, recipient of the IU Kokomo Division of Education Elementary Education Scholarship

• Alicia Lopez, Logansport, recipient of the Cole Family Scholarship

Lopez is a freshmen; the others are seniors.

Guest speaker Rebecca Saddlemire, the principal of North Miami Elementary in Denver, Ind., shared her life story with the reception audience. Describing her vision of an “excellent teacher,” Saddlemire talked about leadership opportunities she pursued as a student at IU Kokomo. Saddlemire earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education through IU Kokomo in 1996.

An international honor society and professional organization in education, Pi Lambda Theta fosters individual leadership and professional excellence in its members. IU Kokomo’s Gamma Gamma Chapter has provided professional conferences and programs for more than 20 years for students, area teachers and administrators. Members of Gamma Gamma mentor students and beginning teachers. They serve on committees and as regional and international officers for PTL. This past summer, seven members of Gamma Gamma attended the PTL International Professional Conference in Boston.
