Miss Manners meets The Donald in business etiquette workshop

October 1, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.—Interviewing you over lunch, Donald Trump seems ready to hire YOU as his apprentice. Should you

A. Compliment Mr. T. on his toupee?

B. Order extra dessert to celebrate?

C. Impress your friends by sending them snaps of The Donald on your picture phone?

The answer is to sort out telephone, dining, and other business etiquette dilemmas beforehand at an October 20 seminar at IU Kokomo. The Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter will present the free seminar, looking at such issues as proper business attire, e-mail on the job, dining with the boss, and politeness in international business relations. The basics of effective PowerPoint® presentations will also be covered. The event runs from 7–9 p.m. in Room 116 of Hunt Hall.

Business etiquette points out the expected “compromise between personal habits and professional habits,” in business settings, said SIFE president Brian VanCamp. Being well versed in business etiquette not only improves customer service but also the bottom line, said VanCamp, a business major from Bunker Hill. “If you’re a business owner asking a bank for a loan or speaking to a would-be investor, you want to be able to handle yourself confidently to earn their trust and investment.”

High school or college seniors and others facing job searches could especially benefit from the etiquette seminar’s lessons, said VanCamp. Business research shows that the outcome of most job interviews “is decided within the first 30 seconds after the interviewer and the job candidate meet,” he said. “So, how you come across counts. And, no matter what level job you’re applying for, if you wear a suit, you are more likely to get the job than someone wearing khakis and a T-shirt.” In many cases, he added, the better-dressed job applicant is offered a higher rate of base pay.

SIFE members Nate Stout of Elwood, Andrea Alderson of Sharpsville, and Erica Markiewicz and Jessica Arnold, both of Kokomo, are seminar presenters.
