KOKOMO, Ind.---Fourteen senior IU Kokomo nursing students will offer information on diabetes at the October 21 Howard County Health Fair in the Johanning Civic Center. Open from 7 a.m.--6 p.m., the free fair is sponsored by Anthem and features approximately 70 vendors offering free health screenings and information on area health care services. Jan Browning of Peru said she and her Community Health classmates working at the fair will emphasize how diabetes can compromise circulation. They will offer tips on monitoring such problems through proper foot care. "We want to be part of this health fair because diabetes is a growing epidemic that doesn't just affect the body of the person with it, but also their lifestyle," Browning said. "We hope to provide diabetics and the caregivers of diabetics with information to help them better their lives." Participating students, listed by hometown, include Lynn Dokes, Atlanta; Jessica Keith, Delphi; Elizabeth Wireman, Flora; Kari Bagwell, Greentown; Kristen Smiley, Indianapolis; Ronda Owens, Noblesville; Jan Browning, Peru; Augusta Hunsberger, Russiaville; Evon Rairdon, Sheridan; Avis Fisher and Rachelle Thompson, both of Marion; and Jessica Bodine, Tiffany Hendrickson and Victoria Thomas, all of Kokomo. Associate Professor of Nursing Nancy Schlapman, Ph.D., teaches the Community Health course. For information on the health fair, contact Melissa Bucur at (765) 457-4020.
