IU and Purdue donors challenged to give blood October 26

October 20, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.—Fall means football season and time for the annual IU v. Purdue Blood Donor Challenge, a friendly competition between the two universities’ alumni, students and friends. The IU Kokomo Alumni Association, along with the Student Alumni Association and the President’s Council, will sponsor a blood drive on Tuesday, October 26, from noon–6 p.m. in KC 130, to benefit the Challenge.

To make an appointment to donate blood, contact Student Body President Donald Andrews at drandrew@iuk.edu.

All blood collected will go to the American Red Cross Blood Services Indiana Ohio lab at Fort Wayne, for testing and later distribution to hospitals in the 32 northernmost counties of Indiana and 9 bordering Ohio counties. “That includes the two hospitals in Kokomo,” said Red Cross District Manager Susie Weaver. “We have to draw 1,200–1,300 units of blood every week to meet the needs of the hospitals we serve. We’ve set a goal of collecting 70 units of blood at IU Kokomo, so we hope to see close to 100 volunteers ready to donate.”

The eighth annual Blood Donor Challenge is sponsored by the IU and Purdue Alumni Associations, the Indiana Blood Center and the American Red Cross. The school with the most blood donations given in its name will be honored during halftime of the 2004 Old Oaken Bucket football game.
