Handmade treasures for sale at November 6 Arts and Crafts Show

KOKOMO, Ind.—The Indiana University Staff Council hosts its 13th Annual Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday, November 6, in Kelley Student Center and Alumni Hall. Admission and parking are free; the event runs from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Visitors can choose holiday gifts and one-of-a-kind handmade items offered by more than 80 crafters and artisans, many from north central Indiana. Items for sale at previous Arts and Crafts Shows have included clothing, jewelry, toys, furniture, woodcrafts, pottery, candles, and seasonal decorations for the home and yard. Show co-chairwoman Tara Halbrook promised “door prizes announced every 15 minutes, and ample room between vendors to shop in comfort.” Food and beverages will be available from the cafeteria in the Kelley Student Center Commons. Halbrook is administrative assistant for the Physical Plant Department. The Staff Council represents all clerical, technical and maintenance employees of IU Kokomo. The Arts and Crafts Show is the group’s major annual fundraising effort in support of campus improvement projects and scholarships for IU Kokomo students. The council awards a portion of its scholarship funds to fellow university employees seeking education. The 2003 Arts and Crafts show had some 1,200 visitors and raised around $3,000, according to co-chairwoman Anna Chaplin, administrative assistant for the Office of Human Resources. “The IU Kokomo community and the Kokomo community support our show, and we just keep growing,” she said. “We have 12 volunteers helping us set up the night before and work the day of the show—that’s what makes the show run so smoothly.” In October, the council sponsored a silent auction of wreaths created by campus employees, which raised $1,000 for scholarships.
