URSI projects on display November 8

KOKOMO, Ind.—Six students will present their findings from 2004 Undergraduate Summer Research Institute (URSI) projects, during a November 8 symposium on the second floor of the IU Kokomo Library. The campus and public are welcome to meet the students and ask questions about their research from 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Faculty receive IU fellowship grants to mentor the student research projects. Research topics and student researchers for 2004 include • “Cross-Cultural Analysis of Tel Scores of Indiana Teachers and National Council of Economic Education Eastern European Participant Teachers.” Amanda Cherry of Kokomo, mentored by Associate Professor of Economics Kathy Parkinson, Ph.D., and Professor of Education Margo Sorgman, Ed.D. • “Total Bacterial Content in the Eggs of Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentine) and Midland Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta marginata). Ashley Gillem of Kokomo, mentored by Associate Professor of Biology Michael Finkler, Ph.D. • “Detection and Characterization of Escherichia coli from Source Water in Indiana.” Marley Griffin of Galveston, mentored by Associate Professor of Biology Christian Chauret, Ph.D. • “Women’s Perspectives on Using Music to Find Inner Strength While Living with Chronic Illness.” Brandey Ehman of Elwood, mentored by Assistant Professor of Nursing Roberta Schweitzer, Ph.D. • “A Mother’s Interactive Behavior with the Premature Newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.” Evon Rairdon of Sheridan, mentored by Assistant Professor of Nursing Carol Wenn-Huey Shieh, D.N.S. • “I’ve Fallen, and I Can’t Get Up: The Plight of the Female Prisoner.” Ashlin Garber of Kokomo, mentored by Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Kelly Brown, Ph.D.
