Pioneer Hi-Bred donates support for sciences at IU Kokomo

October 5, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. has donated $2,500 to Indiana University Kokomo, in support of the campus's science education programs. Tony Herman, assistant manager of the Tipton Production plant, presented a check to Chancellor Ruth Person in early September.

The Tipton Production Plant and Sales Support and Services employs 125 full-time employees and 200–250 seasonal staff, according to Herman. Pioneer employees have taken classes at IU Kokomo, and have received tuition reimbursement through Pioneer, Herman noted. “We look at this gift as a community investment and chance for our company to reconnect with the university, which we have supported with major gifts in the past.”

Almost all of IU Kokomo's 3,200 students take science courses and will use the new laboratory and research equipment that Pioneer's gift will help purchase and maintain, Person said. “Pioneer began operations during 1937 in Tipton County, Indiana, where many of our students and alumni live. This makes us especially appreciate the support of Pioneer, a business that has long contributed to the livelihoods and advancement of this region's population.”

Tipton County farmer Tom McKinney, who is also a member of IU Kokomo's Chancellor's Advisory Board, was present at the check presentation. “It's good to see an agribusiness support local educational opportunity, especially in the sciences,” McKinney said. Pioneer also operates a wheat and corn research division in Windfall, Ind., in Tipton County.
