Stop playing around with colds, flu

October 13, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—Adults are happy when kids want to share—except when youngsters share colds and flu with those around them. Games and other fun activities aimed at limiting that not-so-good sharing will be offered Thursday, October 27, in the Kids' Corner of the 2005 Howard County Health Fair in Kokomo's Johanning Civic Center.

Students of the IU Kokomo School of Nursing, along with Clinical Associate Professor Bridget Whitmore, will host the Kids' Corner from 1–6 p.m.

Whitmore said visiting youngsters can

• See “germ-y bugs” under a microscope

• Play the “Handy Germ” game, which teaches proper handwashing techniques

• Pretend to be a giant nose making a “Big Sneeze”

In the latter activity, Whitmore said, “The kids will use a decorated spray bottle and 'sneeze' toward a paper towel about three feet away. It let's them see how far a sneeze—and the virus it can carry—will go if you don't cover your nose.”

Adult visitors can enter a drawing for a child's booster seat.

Admission to the fair is free.
