Indiana Artists Club picks IU Kokomo for fall show
October 13, 2005
KOKOMO, Ind.—Continuing an almost century-long tradition of celebrating Hoosier fine arts, the Indiana Artists Club, Inc. will hold its fall membership exhibition October 30–November 20 at the Indiana University Kokomo Art Gallery.
“We like it when we can use a gallery in an educational setting,” said 2005 exhibition coordinator Pat Herring. “It lends prestige to the show.” The IU Kokomo Art Gallery is “a wonderful facility,” Herring added, noting the gallery's open layout and central location within the Kelley Student Center. “There's so much flexibility for setting up the show.”
More than 40 entries from around the state will compete in the juried show for cash awards totaling $1,500. David Kwashigrow, director of exhibitions at the Indianapolis Art Center, will serve as juror. Awards will be announced at an opening reception Sunday, October 30, 2–4 p.m.
Organized in 1917 as an association of professional artists, the Indiana Artists Club boasts such notable forefathers as Hoosier Group impressionists T.C. Steele and William Forsyth, and the portrait painter Wayman Adams. Through the years, club members have supported projects to bring fine arts resources to high schools and colleges, and to preserve murals painted at Indianapolis' Wishard Hospital by founding club members.
Today, the Indiana Artists Club's 240 members fall into two categories: professional artists who have exhibited in major juried shows, and associate members who support the arts in Indiana. Open to all members, the group's annual autumn exhibition is held in various galleries around the state.
North central Indiana artists in the show include Rena Brouwer of Delphi, Shirley Quakenbush of Russiaville, and Noblesville residents Arlyne Springer and Beth Forst.
Longtime member of the Indiana Artists Club Shirley Quakenbush has had works displayed previously in the IU Kokomo gallery's Spotlight windows. Her watercolor works won three awards in the recent Kokomo Artists Association fall exhibition, and honors in the 2005 Hoosier Salon show. Beth Forst just joined the Indiana Artists Club this year, but has also been garnering awards for her plein air (outdoor) oil paintings—a top prize in the T.C. Steele Memorial Parade of Flowers and a third place in Indiana State Fair competition.
Admission to all IU Kokomo Art Gallery exhibitions and events is free. Gallery hours are Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Wednesdays, until 8 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays, noon–4 p.m. For more information, visit www.iuk.edu/gallery or call 455-9523.
