More IU classes offered in Anderson

October 20, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo's Division of Labor Studies will expand its Anderson-based classes in January 2006, with four new courses. The eight-week, 3 credit hour courses include

• Contemporary Labor Problems

• American Labor History

• Labor in the Cinema

• Computers for Labor Activists

Starting January 9, classes will be offered at the UAW (United Auto Workers) Local 663 hall on Mondays and Local 662 hall on Tuesdays. Class sessions will run from 9–11:45 a.m. and again from 1–3:45 p.m. In addition, Contemporary Labor Problems will have a night section from 5–7:45 p.m. at both halls.

In July, IU Kokomo offered its first for-credit courses in Anderson, allowing students to earn an Indiana University associate or bachelor's degree in labor studies. Several of the local Anderson labor unions, including the UAW, Anderson Federation of Teacher, and the Utility Workers Local supported the effort.

Program coordinator and Labor Studies faculty member William Mello, Ph.D., said the courses are specifically targeted at helping workers learn more about the world in which they work but can also help displaced workers increase their employment options. “We had good response to the initial for-credit classes offered this summer, and are glad that the local unions are providing space for more classes this fall,” Mello said.

Students can enroll by contacting Patrick Hill at (765) 455-9403 or (765) 642-6210 or Lynn Gosser at lgosser@iuk.edu or (765) 455-9387.

November Workshops

In November, Anderson's UAW Local 663 will also host a two-part IU Division of Labor Studies “Labor Issues” Workshop. The non-credit workshop begins on Saturday, November 5, looking at “Workplace Discrimination and Fair Employment.” The following Saturday, November 12, the workshop will examine “Union Leadership and Representation.” Both sessions run from 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The course fee is $55-per-day or $110 to attend both days. Enrollment is by phone or e-mail, per above.
