Start holiday shopping at November 5 Arts and Crafts Show

October 20, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—Handmade and one-of-a-kind items are the hallmark of the Indiana University Kokomo Staff Council's annual Arts and Crafts Show, marking its 14th year on Saturday, November 5. “Jewelry is a pretty hot item this year,” said co-chair Tara Halbrook, administrative assistant for the campus' Physical Plant Department.

“Our more than 80 vendors will offer cookies in a jar, quilts, doll clothes, PVC kids chairs, clothing, floral arrangements, stained glass, cross-stitch, wood items, Kokomo bricks, folk art, purses, pillows, candles, and a variety of fudge from a Greentown vendor, just to name some of the sales items.” The show runs from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. in the Kelley Student Center and Alumni Hall. Admission and parking are free. Food and beverages will be available from the cafeteria in the Kelley Student Center Commons.

Halbrook's co-chair is Anna Chaplin, administrative assistant for the Office of Human Resources. Chaplin is again teaming with campus staffer Linda Bielewicz to offer a booth of jewelry and floral arrangements. “This year, we have asked Marcia Sandy to join us,” Chaplin said. “She paints gourds, all sizes, all shapes. Some are irresistible looking cats!

The 2004 Arts and Crafts show drew 1,000-plus visitors, Chaplain noted. “But the campus facilities still allow for plenty of room to browse and shop in comfort,” she said.

The Staff Council represents the clerical, technical, and maintenance employees of IU Kokomo. Last year's show raised around $3,200 for the council's two main activities: campus improvements projects and scholarships for IU Kokomo students. The council targets some scholarship funds for fellow employees enrolled in classes.
