October 17 blood drive at IU Kokomo
October 3, 2006
KOKOMO, Ind.—Roll up those sleeves, alumni! Your university wants you to take part in the 10th annual IU vs. Purdue Blood Donor Challenge, running through November 10. Donations will be accepted at all Indiana Blood Center locations.
Indiana University Kokomo will conduct a Challenge blood drive on campus Tuesday, October 17, from noon–6 p.m. in Kelley Student Center. Contributors can donate blood in the name of either university; participation is open to the public. Persons who are ineligible to donate may enter a vote for their favored school.
Director of Alumni Relations Cathy Hightower said the campus held “a very successful blood drive” benefiting the 2005 IU vs. Purdue Blood Donor Challenge. That drive and this year’s are co-sponsored the IU Kokomo Alumni Association, the IU Kokomo Student Alumni Association, and Presidents Council representing all student organizations. “Fifty-six units of blood were donated on campus last year, having the potential to save 168 lives,” Hightower said. “We hope to increase donations to at least 70 units this year.”
To make an appointment to donate on October 17, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@iuk.edu or (765) 455-9411. You are eligible to donate blood if you
• Are at least 17 years old and in general good health
• Weigh a minimum of 110 pounds
• Have not donated blood in the past 56 days
The winning university is honored at the Old Oaken Bucket football game between IU and Purdue. Last year, IU won. Since the friendly competition began in 1997, more than 32,000 donors have participated in the blood drives.
The Blood Donor Challenge is made possible through the collaboration of Indiana University Alumni Association, Purdue Alumni Association, Indiana Blood Center, American Red Cross, Heartland Blood Center, Richmond Community Blood Center, and the South Bend Medical Foundation.
