STELARC: Innovative Artist Presents at IU Kokomo

October 22, 2007

Kokomo, Indiana—Director of the IU Kokomo Art Gallery, Gregory Steel, is pleased to announce a special presentation by internationally known Australian performance and multi-media artist Stelarc. Stelarc will give a presentation on Tuesday, October 23, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in IU Kokomo’s Havens Auditorium.

Stelarc, one of the world’s most innovative artists, has been performing and creating multidisciplinary projects internationally since the late 1960’s. Through a number of well-known performances/projects such as “Third Hand”, 1980; with which he will be performing at Havens, “Extra Ear: Ear on Arm” 2006, and his early suspension events, his goal has been to look at the body as a tool that can be enhanced by the incorporation and integration of technology. Stelarc utilizes technology to question physical parameters and has explored alternate, intimate, and involuntary interfaces that promote the enhancement and alteration of the physical body.

The artist will travel to five IU campuses around the State through the support of Indiana University Exhibitions (IUEX). Steel, who also wrote the IU New Frontiers grant for the five-campus Stelarc tour, says that the IUEX organization, a collaborative initiative between museum and gallery directors from IU campuses throughout the State, strives to make contemporary art accessible to IU campuses and communities through a shared and cooperative series of exhibits and events.
