SIFE sponsors “Give A Chicken”
October 28, 2008
SIFE sponsors “Give A Chicken” to help African orphanage Kokomo, Indiana – Giving a little will mean a lot through the “Give a Chicken” program sponsored by Students in Free Enterprise at Indiana University Kokomo. Monetary donations of any amount will be collected on Tuesday, Oct. 28, and Wednesday, Oct. 29, to help purchase chickens for the Mulunda Miaka Orphanage in Zambia, Africa.
SIFE representatives will accept donations from noon to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and noon to 5 p.m. on Wednesday across from the bookstore in the Kelley Student Center. The IU Kokomo SIFE organization joined the cause after being contacted by Anderson University’s SIFE program, which has set a goal of purchasing 200 chickens by November 30.
It costs only $6 for one chicken that can go on to produce about $9 in additional revenue for the orphanage (per chicken). The purchase of a chicken also covers expenses for feed and medication, meaning that when the chicken or eggs are sold, all the profit goes directly to the orphanage.
Zambia is a land-locked country located in central southern Africa. Chickens are a staple food and a main source of protein in the Zambian diet. They also serve as a viable revenue source. At Mulunda Miaka Orphanage, chickens and eggs will be used for meals and will also be sold to help the orphanage be self-sustainable. Many children in developing countries lack adequate meat in their diet, and often become malnourished. Chickens provide a viable, affordable source of protein to children and adults alike.
