IU Kokomo to host annual meeting for state science academy

October 15, 2009

Kokomo, Ind. – Nearly 250 scientists from across the state will converge on the Indiana University Kokomo campus for presentations and networking during the annual fall meeting of the Indiana Academy of Science on Thursday, October 22, and Friday, October 23.

IU Kokomo students and faculty will participate in the research presentations, ranging from chemistry, to engineering and science education, to social science. About 140 such presentations are expected to be given during the two-day conference, which marks the 125th anniversary for the Academy.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with the turnout we are expecting. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote science education and all that IU Kokomo has to offer,” said Michael Finkler, Ph.D., local organizer and associate professor of biology on campus. “Having the annual meeting here will bring a lot of attention and focus on the facilities we have available at IU Kokomo. It’s pretty rare for us to host an academic meeting of this size here on our campus.”

Guest speaker for the event is Gerould Wilhelm, principle botanist and ecologist with the Conservation Design Forum in Elmhurst, Illinois. He is co-author of a well-known field manual titled, “Plants of the Chicago Region,” a definitive botany book for plant species in the northern portion of Indiana.

Anyone interested in attending any portion of the meeting can do so by registering online at www.indianaacademyofscience.org, or on the first day of the conference in the Kelley Student Center Commons. Costs are as follows: For Academy membership and conference registration, $70; for conference only, $45; for student academy membership and conference registration, $20. Payments can be made with cash or check. For more information, contact Finkler at mfinkler@iuk.edu.
