IU Kokomo to host blood drive benefitting ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,’ local American Red Cross chapter

October 22, 2009

Kokomo, Ind. – The Indiana University Kokomo Alumni Association will be hosting its annual blood drive next week, in conjunction with the popular television show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and home builder Hallmark Homes. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 27, from noon to 6 p.m. in the Kelley Student Center, Room 130.

The blood drive will be in honor of Bunker Hill residents Andy and Heather Cowan, factory workers who struggle to support their four children Ryan, 16, Trevor, 13, Mason, 8, and their daughter Kori, 12, who is battling a congenital blood disease. The Cowans were chosen by “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” to rebuild their home.

The following link features a video of the Cowan family and a word from Designer Didiayer Snyder, thanking the campus community for its involvement.

All presenting donors at this blood drive will also receive a commemorative t-shirt and a coupon good for one free Mike’s carwash, while supplies last. In addition, donors will have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a $50 gasoline gift card. Please go to givelife.org and enter sponsor code “iukokomo” to schedule your blood donation appointment, or call the IU Kokomo Office of Alumni Relations at 765-455-9411, or e-mail at alumni@iuk.edu.

Each episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” is self-contained and features a race against time on a project that would ordinarily take at least four months, involving a team of designers, contractors and several hundred workers who have just seven days (one week for the actual construction) to rebuild an entire house – every room, the exterior and landscaping.

Indiana University Kokomo serves a seven county, primary service area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four graduate degrees.
