Ardrey honored with bench, Sagamore
September 11, 2003 | |||||
KOKOMO, Ind.—A bench honoring former IU Kokomo Library Director Richard L. Ardrey was unveiled August 22 on campus, before a convocation launching the 2003–2004 academic year. A Sagamore of the Wabash proclamation was also presented to Ardrey.
Former staff members and friends of Ardrey’s donated the bench and nearby landscaping of IU “Cream and Crimson” flowers. They are located on a walkway south of the Library. Ardrey’s name and his years of service with the Library, 1965–2003, are engraved on the bench’s sides. He retired in June. The highest honor that the Governor of Indiana presents to citizens, the Sagamore of the Wabash recognizes service to the state and community. The Sagamore proclamation given to Ardrey cited his “Humanity in Living, His Loyalty in Friendship, his Wisdom in Council, and his Inspiration in Leadership.” “It was a total surprise to me to receive this honor for doing something that has been so rewarding to me over these last 38 years,” said Ardrey, a Kokomo resident. The Library Staff “made my life enjoyable and made me look good,” he added. “I thank them for this honor and for the opportunity to work with them. “I have enjoyed working and serving with the administration, faculty, staff and students of Indiana University Kokomo. What a bunch of great people.”
