Staff Council supports scholarships with wreath auction, arts and crafts show

September 18, 2003

A silent auction of seasonal wreaths is IU Kokomo Staff Council’s newest fundraiser for scholarships. Running October 1–27 in the IU Kokomo Library, the auction will feature evergreen and grapevine wreaths, decorated by campus employees. Proceeds will benefit an additional scholarship, joining others the Council has underwritten. Support for scholarships and campus improvement projects is also the aim of the Staff Council’s 12th Annual Arts and Crafts Show on Saturday, November 8. More than 80 vendors will sell a variety of handcrafted items, including candles, jewelry, clothing, toys, wooden bowls and furniture, pottery, floral crafts, bath soaps and salts, baskets, holiday decorations, rugs and lawn ornaments. Shoppers can win door prizes donated by the vendors and can purchase lunch. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Kelley Student Center. Admission and parking are free.

The Staff Council represents all clerical, technical, and maintenance employees of the IU Kokomo campus. Its scholarship endowment, established in 1986, funds a $500 scholarship to a full-time student as well as a $500 scholarship to a part-time student each academic year. The Council has also provided financial support for the IU Kokomo Library and purchased campus equipment including picnic tables and student lounge furniture. Making scholarship fundraising the number one priority on the Council’s agenda is a way to “show loyalty to the university,” said Kimberly Maxwell, faculty secretary for the Division of Education and a chairperson for the craft show. Staff members often work in close contact with students, she added “We hear about their financial and other needs.”

“There are many students who just wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for scholarships,” said craft show co-chair Tara Halbrook, secretary for the Physical Plant Department. The Council also wants to help the many staff employees—Maxwell and Halbrook included—who take classes and are working toward degrees at IU Kokomo. By fall 2004, the Council hopes to offer a scholarship specifically for staff workers who are students.
