Baseball insider Will Carroll to speak at IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind.—Will Carroll, host of ESPN 950’s “Baseball Prospectus” radio show, will share his insider knowledge of baseball and other sports with the public Thursday, September 25, at Indiana University Kokomo. A guest of the Professional Communications degree program, Carroll will speak at 7 p.m. in the Hunt Hall Science building’s first floor auditorium. Admission and parking is free. The author of the Internet column “Under the Knife,” Carroll draws on his background in sports medicine to examine baseball injuries, their prevention, and their effects on individual and team performance. His recent interview subjects include Boston Red Sox outfielder Rickey Henderson, baseball columnist Jayson Stark, and legendary sports broadcaster Harry Kalas. Newsweek and other national news media have sought out Carroll for his knowledgeable insights on controversial subjects, such as Pete Rose’s possible reinstatement into baseball. IU Kokomo Assistant Professor of English Scott Jones, Ph.D., said he invited Carroll to address his Professional Communications class because Carroll’s recent career path reflects ways that technology has changed professional writing. Carroll’s views can be seen in the annual Baseball Prospectus, a massive printed volume of baseball statistics and predictions on player performance. In the last two years, the publishers created a Baseball Prospectus Web site, which carries online columns by Carroll and other authors. This lead to Carroll’s radio show, which can be heard on WXLW, Indianapolis, or via the Internet at espn950.com. “Like Carroll, those who communicate for a living need today to know many disciplines—English, journalism, public speaking, and writing that gets its point across on Web sites as well as in print,” Jones said. “These are the subjects IU Kokomo teaches in its interdisciplinary Professional Communications major.” As a baseball fan, Jones added, he couldn’t resist asking Carroll to stay for a public session on September 25, “so we could hear some good baseball stories.” Go to www.willcarroll.com for bio.
