Three-time Olympian Gonzalez to speak at IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind.—Three-time Olympian and motivational speaker Ruben Gonzalez says he’s “not a big shot.” Rather, he tells his audiences, “I’m just a little shot that keeps on shooting. I’m proof that ordinary people can aspire to achieve extraordinary things if they will just follow a few simple steps.” Gonzalez brings his message to IU Kokomo on Monday, September 29, in a 7 p.m. presentation in Kresge Auditorium. Free and open to the public, the talk is part of the campus’ Hispanic Heritage Celebration, sponsored by the student organization El Mundo Hispano. Gonzalez competed in the luge in three Winter Olympics—Calgary in 1988, Albertville in 1992, and Salt Lake City in 2002. A native of Argentina, he came to the United States with his family as a child and was raised in Queens, N.Y. Whereas most Olympic luge athletes begin luging at age 12, Gonzalez was 21 before he got on a luge, just four years before his first Olympic appearance. Gonzalez describes the luge as a 50-pound, four-foot long sled with no brakes. In competition, the sled and its passenger hurtle at 80-miles-per-hour along a mile-long chute of ice that starts 50 stories up and snakes down a mountain. “Once you start, you’re committed,” says Gonzalez. “There’s no stopping!” Gonzalez uses his Olympic experience and touches of humor to spread his message of “Becoming Unstoppable.” He has appeared nationally on ABC, CBS, and NBC, and been featured in Time magazine, as well as publications in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, France, Austria and Argentina. He has presented motivational presentations to numerous employee groups, including audiences from the City of Houston, Chevrolet Motors, Shell Oil and Marriott Hotels.
