KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo honored Kokomo residents Cathy Archer and Ellen Sigler as the 2004 recipients of Virgil Hunt Service Awards. Archer has been administrative secretary for the Division of Continuing Studies, since 2001. Sigler is starting her fifth year as an assistant professor of educational psychology. Named for the first director of the Kokomo campus, the awards recognize a staff member and faculty member for volunteer contributions to the campus and their communities. Vice president of the IU Kokomo Staff Council, Archer will chair the council’s October fundraiser for scholarships, a silent auction of seasonal wreaths created by campus employees. She has also served on the Commitment to Excellence Committee and collected campus donations for United Way of Howard County. She has been an active volunteer for the American Cancer’s Society’s Relay for Life, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Special Olympics, Walk for Diabetes, and the Indiana School for the Blind. From 1999–2003, Archer coached freshmen, junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders for Northwestern High School, guiding those squads to top awards in statewide competitions. Sigler is advisor to the Division of Education’s Exploring Teaching Post and to student teachers who work at IU Kokomo’s Little Learners Child Care Center. She is vice president of the Faculty Senate, chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee and a member of the IU Kokomo Leadership Council, Commitment to Excellence Committee and Advisory Committee for Information Technology. Sigler currently serves as the first female president of the Kokomo Noon Lions Club. She has also chaired the Lions’ scholarship and fundraising programs. She is a member of the Policy Council for Early Head Start through Bona Vista and has assisted at migrant farm worker camps through St. Joan of Arc Church.
