Discover university options over lunch October 1

September 20, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.---On Friday, October 1, you can pick up lunch---in a convenient Indiana University Kokomo nail apron---and learn about educational opportunities for adults wanting a first degree or anyone seeking a graduate degree. The Division of Continuing Studies' Fall Open House for ACCELerated Evening College and Graduate Students runs from 11 a.m.--1 p.m. in Room 130 of the Kelley Student Center.

Recognizing the time pressures faced by many working adults, Continuing Studies decided to do something "a little different" in the open house, said Academic Advisor Lori Collins. "Each person who attends can pick up a nail apron (with an IU logo imprinted on it) and go to a food table where they can select a wrapped sandwich, cookie, bag of chips, and a 20-ounce drink to put in the apron."

Visitors can then proceed around the room, eating lunch while they talk to faculty from IU Kokomo's various associate, bachelor's, and master's degree programs, as well as admissions and financial aid advisors, Collins said. "On your lunch hour, you can find out about our many one-night-a-week ACCELerated Evening College courses," she said. "We'll tell you about transferring credits from previous college and work experience, whether you might qualify for scholarships, and how earning a degree can help you advance in your profession."

To ensure that a lunch is held for you, contact the Division of Continuing Studies by September 24 at (765) 455-9426, (800) 991-1459, or click here to register online at www.iuk.edu/openhouse. The event and lunch are free.

Adult students see the important connection between their work and what they'll learn in the university, Collins said. "Adult students have had successes and know how to focus and work toward goals, like graduation."

Students who've not been in a classroom for years may feel uncertain about coming back to class, but IU Kokomo can help with that, too. Collins is instructing a new class, called the College Colloquium for Returning Adult Students. The three-week refresher course helps adult students brush up on needed computer, time-management and study skills, so they can move confidently into university courses.

Indiana University Kokomo is located west of U.S. 31 on the south side of Kokomo. From U.S. 31, turn onto Lincoln Road heading west. Take Lincoln to Washington Street and turn right (north). The campus is on the right-hand side at 2300 S. Washington St. Turn into the first drive to reach visitor parking in the garage. Parking is free.
