KOKOMO, Ind.---IU Kokomo School of Nursing students who are also employees of Howard Regional Health System will be eligible to receive the new Phillip L. Kauble Nursing Scholarship. Carolyn Kauble and her children Thomas Kauble and Laura Glon established the scholarship fund to honor the memory of their late husband and father, who died of cancer in 2003. According to the gift agreement, the scholarship also acknowledges "the excellence of nursing care Phillip Kauble received at Howard Community Hospital," as Howard Regional Health System was formerly known. Even before his long battle with cancer, Phil Kauble was known as a fighter. He worked for Continental Steel Corporation Kokomo from 1962 until the plant closed in 1986. Kuable fought to secure pension benefits for himself and other workers who lost their jobs with the plant closing. His activism inspired a pension reform bill, proposed in the U.S. Senate. It also earned Kauble the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest civilian award presented by the governor of Indiana for outstanding public service. Ranging from $500 to $1,000, the annual Kauble Scholarships will be available to students pursuing associate, bachelor's or master's degrees. Preference will given to applicants in clinical classes, and to students interested in the fields of cancer research or oncology. Community service of applicants will also be considered. "The Kauble family's gift shows their regard for maintaining the high level of heath care available in north central Indiana," said Dean of Nursing Penny Cass, Ph.D. "The School of Nursing is proud to contribute to that excellence, through the large number of our students and graduates who work and hold leadership positions in local medical services." To apply for the Phillip L. Kauble Nursing Scholarship, contact the School of Nursing at (765) 455-9288. Persons interested in contributing to scholarships benefiting IU Kokomo students should contact the Office of External Relations, (765) 455-9485.
