Students to debate presidential issues September 28

September 24, 2004

KOKOMO, Ind.—Warm up for the real presidential debates by attending a student version, hosted Tuesday, September 28, by IU Kokomo’s History/Political Science Club. Students representing Republican, Democratic, and independent positions will take part in the 7–9 p.m. debate, in Room 130 of the Kelley Student Center.

Issues to be discussed will include the war in Iraq and various domestic policies, such as health care and education, said club moderator Allen Safianow, Ph.D., a professor of history. Audience members will have an opportunity to pose questions. The event is free and open to the public.

The students participating are all IU Kokomo students, although not necessarily history/political science majors, Safianow said. “The debate is being held in conjunction with a voter registration drive taking place that week on campus. The hope is that the debate will generate student interest in the upcoming election and in political issues in general,” he said.

The presentation is part of the “Building Character. Building Communities.” series being offered at IU Kokomo this fall under the American Democracy Project, which encourages civic engagement by undergraduates. The series schedule can be seen at www.iuk.edu/adp. American Democracy Project events/activities will take place on campus through spring 2006.

Weekday guests to campus who do not have an IU Kokomo parking pass are asked to park in the lower level of the parking garage, located on the south end of campus. Parking is free.
