KOKOMO, Ind.---Lecturer in Communication Arts Jaime Howell will lead development and coaching of a new student speech and debate team at IU Kokomo. Howell expects team members to be competing in intercollegiate tournaments by spring. Team participation is open to all students, whether or not they have previous public speaking experience, Howell said. This fall, students will practice 7Ð10 minute presentations in front of their peers and select the various "individual events"---styles of speech and debate---in which they want to compete. The team will meet each Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Room 221 of the Kelley Student Center. Speech individual events include informative or persuasive "platform speaking," humorous/satirical 'after-dinner' speeches and extemporaneous speeches that respond to written questions. In dramatic speaking, a special sub-category of speech, orators present poetry and scripted monologues and dialogues. Debate falls into two categories. Parliamentary debate grows out of the British Parliament's custom of teams representing "the government" and "the opposition" arguing for and against a resolution. Lincoln-Douglas debating requires a more formal presentation of evidence and more extensive preparation than the parliamentary style, Howell said. By the 2005--2006 academic year, Howell hopes that IU Kokomo speech and debate team members will be ready to join the national forensic fraternity Pi Kappa Delta. Membership in the prestigious fraternity "is great thing to have on your resume, especially if you want to go to law school," she said. Developing public speaking skills can enhance several career paths, Howell said. To be successful, politicians, business people, and teachers all need to address public groups persuasively "Many nurses today have to do small group public speaking," she added. Speech training also trains you as a listener, capable of distinguishing between what "sounds good" and what is "sound content that can help you make a judgment or decision," Howell said. Assistant Professor of Communication Arts Bill Dulaney designed the team logo, caricatures of Greek busts in animated debate. Faculty, staff or alumni interested in serving as travel judges for off-campus speech and debate tournaments should contact Howell at jlhowell@iuk.edu. Howell will also help coordinate a campus Speech Olympics on November 18. Students in fall semester public speaking courses will compete for finalists' positions and cash prizes in the event, which is open to the campus and public. In spring 2005 semester, Howell will teach the course "Argumentation and Debate" through the School of Arts and Sciences (SOAS).
