IU Kokomo hosts annual 9/11 memorial

September 1, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—On Monday, September 12, Indiana University Kokomo will pay tribute to the victims and heroes of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. The public and campus community are welcome to attend “Remembering September 11,” starting at 9:45 a.m. at the flagpole in front of the campus' Main Building.

The brief ceremony will include the playing of “Taps;” salutes by area firefighters, police, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152; and remarks by Kokomo Mayor Matt McKillip and IU Kokomo Chancellor Ruth Person.

The Office of Student Activities and the Student Government Association has helped organize the memorial for the past four years. Current student body president Kyle Etherington of Kokomo has strongly advocated for a September 11 tribute “to become a lasting campus tradition at IU Kokomo.”

“Like many people in central Indiana, I will never forget September 11, 2001,” Etherington said. “The ceremony gives us a moment to honor those who lost their lives on that tragic day. It also lets us recall the heroism and sacrifice of our current armed forces and veterans.”

In case of rain, the ceremony will move to Alumni Hall. Persons without campus parking permits should follow signs to visitor parking. For more information, call (765) 455-9203.
