KOKOMO, Ind.—Gary P. Randle, M.S.R.T. (R.) joins the IU Kokomo faculty this fall as a clinical assistant professor of radiologic technology, teaching in the new Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Medical Imaging Technology program.

The campus's three-year-old Associate of Science in Radiography program qualifies students to take a national certification examination and become registered radiologic technologists. B.S. students, Randle said, will develop expertise in specific methods, or “modalities,” of medical imaging, including ultrasound, MRI (medical resonance imaging), CT (computered tomography), or mammography. The demand and pay scale for technologists in such modalities is “extremely high,” Randle said. “The job market is wide open for our future B.S. graduates.”

Until recent years, on-the-job training was standard for most x-ray and other medical imaging technologists. That is changing, Randle said. “The profession is leaning toward having a bachelor's degree as an entry-level requirement,” he said. “If technologists want to go into education, they will need a B.S. It can also take them into supervision and management in imaging departments.”

Randle was a full professor and director of the radiography program at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Fla., for 26 years. Subsequently, he was clinical coordinator of radiography at Fayetteville Technical Community College (N.C.). He has been a professional speaker for the American Society of Radiologic Technology and the Association of Educators in Radiologic Sciences. He earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University in 1975, and a master's degree from Nova Southeastern University, Orlando, Fla., in 1995.

A soccer referee and coach for 12 years, Randle also enjoys golf and fishing. Married for 35 years, he has one son and four grandchildren.
