IU Kokomo welcomes hurricane-affected students

September 2, 2005

Kokomo, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo has joined universities and colleges nationwide that are assisting students whose fall semesters were suspended by Hurricane Katrina. Students forced out of schools damaged by the storm and who are returning home to north central Indiana may seek admission and enrollment at IU Kokomo for fall semester, said Chancellor Ruth Person.

“IU Bloomington, IUPUI, and IU Northwest have also opened their campuses to accommodate students displaced by Hurricane Katrina,” Person said. “We would like to do whatever we can to help such students get their lives and their educations back on track.”

Vice Chancellor Jack Tharp said any new student would first need to be admitted to Indiana University by contacting the Office of Admission at (765) 455-9217, toll-free (888) 875-4IUK, or www.iuk.edu/admissions. “We would certainly work with any students who came to us,” Tharp said.

Enrollment in fall classes would be handled on a case-by-case basis, he added. As IU Kokomo enters the third week of its 15-week semester, being able to accommodate students in all course choices “might be a little more problematic” than at the sister campuses, Tharp said. The Kokomo campus started classes on August 22, a week before other IU sites.

Student leaders at IU Kokomo are meeting immediately after Labor Day to discuss and organize disaster relief efforts on campus. In an e-mail to campus, Chancellor Person indicated that she is keeping in contact with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, a group fielding requests for assistance from institutions of higher learning affected by the disaster.
