Mardi Gras theme drives hurricane relief marathon, concert

September 9, 2005

KOKOMO, Ind.—The good times will roll again in New Orleans and other parts of the southern United States devastated by Hurricane Katrina. That's the hope of students who will host a Mardi Gras–themed, 24-hour marathon collection for hurricane relief at Indiana University Kokomo, starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 14. Students from both IU Kokomo and Purdue University College of Technology Kokomo will accept monetary contributions at a drive-through collection site on Rebecca Lane up to 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 15. Rebecca Lane is a campus thoroughfare located between Lafountain and Washington.

All funds raised will benefit the American Red Cross; individuals and businesses are encouraged to contribute. Kokomo radio stations WZWZ and WIOU will partner with the IU Kokomo student body to announce and promote the initiative.

As a demonstration of IU Kokomo's solidarity with the people of New Orleans, donors will receive Mardi Gras beads (while supplies last). Student groups, alumni, and others from the campus community are encouraged to volunteer at the collection post for at least one hour during the marathon. Contact the Office of Student Activities, (765) 455-9203 or activities@iuk.edu to volunteer.

Umoja hosts relief concert

Singers and musicians from at least nine Kokomo churches will perform during a September 17 concert benefiting victims of Hurricane Katrina, set in IU Kokomo's Havens Auditorium. The multicultural student organization Umoja is teaming with the City of Kokomo to host the 6 p.m. concert. Admission is free; donations will be accepted for hurricane relief.

Musical groups interested in performing for the concert should contact Patricia McClung at (765) 860-7764 or Betty Stewart at (765) 271-5394.

Collection buckets have already been established on the IU Kokomo campus for the American Red Cross' hurricane relief efforts. Buckets can be found in the Kelley Student Center Commons, the Learning Enhancement Center, the Office of the Registrar, and the IU Kokomo Bookstore.
