IU Kokomo sees more freshmen, steady enrollment
September 16, 2005
KOKOMO, Ind.—Indiana University Kokomo has enrolled 2,895 students for fall semester 2005, just eight fewer students than the fall 2004 enrollment of 2,903 students. Repeating a trend of several previous semesters, those students are taking more credit hours than before—28,127 in 2005, an increase of 202 credit hours, or plus 0.7 percent, from the 2004 fall total of 27,925 credit hours.
“A bright spot in the current enrollment was a 5 percent increase in full-time freshmen, which in part accounted for our increase in total credit hours,” said Chancellor Ruth Person.
More than 70 percent of those enrolling at IU Kokomo for the first time are full-time students—that is, carrying 12 or more credit hours per semester. Fifteen years ago, less than 50 percent of the student population attended full time. “The Kokomo campus, as with the other IU regional campuses, continues to attract greater numbers of traditional-age full-time students,” said Vice Chancellor for Student Services Jack Tharp, Ed.D.
The number of first-time students entering the IU Kokomo School of Business “shot up dramatically” since last year, Tharp said—from 69 in fall 2004 to 99 now. “Within the School of Arts and Sciences, enrollment in the 2-year-old history/political science major is up. Biology continues to be a strong major in terms of enrollment,” he said. IU Kokomo's School of Nursing continues to have the highest enrollment of all the campus' academic units, reflecting the ongoing employment demand for nurses.
Including students enrolled in courses through Purdue University College of Technology Kokomo, the campus currently serves more than 3,200 students.
Enrollment figures for all eight Indiana University campuses showed a total 98,543 students in fall 2005, enrolled in a record-number 1,125,683 credit hours. From figures one year ago, that is a 0.0 percent decrease/increase in enrollment—a change of only two students—and a 0.9 percent increase in credit hours taken. The figures also showed 77,079 full-time students enrolled this year, an increase of 0.9 percent.
