Greenwood selected for national task force
September 22, 2005
KOKOMO, Ind.The American Sociological Association (A.S.A.) has invited Indiana University Kokomo Associate Professor of Sociology Nancy A. Greenwood, Ph.D., to serve on a 12-member national task force. Drawn from college and university faculties, the task force members will develop models for how sociology courses should contribute to general education requirements and liberal arts skills. Greenwood is the only member from an Indiana school.
An A.S.A. memo said the task force would focus on six challenges in general education where sociology does, can, or should play a role. They are
Multicultural education/diversity
Quantitative literacy
Writing-intensive experiences
Freshman survey courses
Interdisciplinary freshman seminars
International/global issues
Greenwood said she is most interested in contributing ideas on the connections between general education and sociology, ideas she has explored at IU Kokomo in introductory sociology and freshman interdisciplinary courses. I am currently completing a book about teaching introductory sociology that, in part, deals with these issues, she said.
An active member of the ASA's Section on Teaching and Learning for more than 20 years, Greenwood is a past chair of the section and has served various other offices. She has worked with the ASA's Department Review Group since 1991. This is a select group of about 50 sociologists chosen by ASA to conduct teaching workshops, program review visits, and write and review teaching materials published by the ASA, she said.
Greenwood also directs IU Kokomo's Bachelor of Arts in Health and Aging degree program.
