Iota Epsilon wins two national awards

September 14, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—Phi Sigma Sigma national sorority has presented two awards to Iota Epsilon Chapter at Indiana University Kokomo. The chapter received a first place award for outstanding public relations and a Bronze Chapter Excellence Award.

The latter recognizes Phi Sigma Sigma chapters that have earned 70 percent or more of annual activity points designated by the national organization. Phi Sigma Sigma has chartered over 150 collegiate chapters in the United States and Canada.

“I am very proud and honored that our chapter received these awards,” said Archon Jennifer Easter of Kokomo, the local chapter’s top officer. Iota Epsilon activities included charity fundraisers, participation in AngelWalk/Take Back the Night, and volunteer work at the Kokomo Rescue Mission.

Ashley McKibben of Kokomo served as the chapter’s public relations officer last year, although, “Our entire chapter always worked together on P.R.,” Easter noted. “Ashley made sure we had the things we needed.”

Rock-a-thon for Kidney Foundation

Iota Sigma will sponsor a fundraising rock-a-thon September 28–29. The chapter’s 18 current members will work in shifts to keep rocking chairs moving for 24 hours. They will rock in IU Kokomo’s Alumni Hall on September 28 from 8 a.m.–8 p.m., and then resume their efforts on Sept. 29, 8 a.m.–8 p.m., at Kokomo’s Cracker Barrel Restaurant on U.S. 31. Pledges for the rockers’ time will benefit Phi Sigma Sigma’s national philanthropic cause, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF).

“We will have donation buckets for anyone to donate to the NKF,” Easter said. “ We are hoping to get a slide show or video about the Transplant Games to show while we’re in Alumni Hall.” Iota Epsilon members volunteered at the summer 2006 Transplant Games in Kentucky, where kidney transplant survivors and donors competed. “It was an amazing experience!” said Easter.
