Recycled Percussion brings funk back to Havens

September 21, 2006

KOKOMO, Ind.—Drumsticks and drummers will be in non-stop motion when Recycled Percussion performs Friday, October 6, at 8 p.m. in Indiana University Kokomo’s Havens Auditorium. The band delivers a “high-intensity, adrenaline-packed show,” of rock and hip-hop, according to Holly Hill of Alexandria. She saw the group perform on campus last January. Beating out complex rhythms on drums, cymbals, 50-gallon steel containers, and power tools, the performers “never lost my attention,” Hill said. “Even little kids were having fun with it.”

Tipton guitarist Aaron Anderson praised Recycled Percussion’s “excellent” musicianship and timing. “I was very impressed by their physical movement while playing,” Anderson said.

Dylan Jackson of Sharpsville can’t wait to see what sort of ingenious instruments Recycled Percussion performs on this time, said his mom, Amy Jackson. Age 14 when he attended the January concert, Dylan “is a drummer, so he loved it all,” she added. “He has seen Stomp and this was just as good to him, but more intimate, because of the size of Havens.” Although very young children might be intimidated by Recycled Percussion’s loud volume, Amy said she can recommend the show as good family fare. “We are definitely coming to see them again.”

With a new DJ, stage sets, and equipment, Recycled Percussion launched its “Rock Your Junk” tour in August. The group will make more than 250 stops at colleges, theaters, and halftime shows for the National Basketball Association and National Football League.

IU Kokomo’s Student Union Board (S.U.B.) is sponsoring the October 6 concert. Tickets are free with an IU Kokomo ID, $5 with any other student ID, and $10 for the public.

Havens Auditorium will open at 7:30 p.m. on October 6 for open seating. “We have only 868 seats available, and they will go fast, “said S.U.B. director Mike Glassburn. “Everyone must have a ticket to get in.” Tickets can be purchased and picked up only through the IU Kokomo Office of Student Activities, on the second floor of Kelley Student Center. Call (765) 455-9414 for information.

Audio and video clips of Recycled Percussion performances are available on the band’s Web site, www.recycledpercussion.com.
