Beware the snarling snowplow!

KOKOMO—Snowdrifts around Kokomo will melt in terror, when a monstrous snowplow, created by Indiana University Kokomo student artists, bears down on the quaking flakes this winter. The students painted rotting green teeth and snarling lips on the plow’s blade for their entry in the City of Kokomo’s first Snowplow Painting Contest. A separate three-dimensional tongue set in front of the blade completes the nightmare.
Student artists Tiffany Morrison, Sara Willis, Jenni Singleton, Elizabeth Bates, and Stephanie Britton decorated the 10-foot-by-3-foot blade with the encouragement of Lecturer in Fine Arts Minda Douglas. Morrison is a nursing major from Galveston. Willis is a Russiaville resident, studying in University Division. Singleton is majoring in humanities; Bates, in history; and Britton, in psychology. All three live in Kokomo.
The public can see IU Kokomo’s entry, along with blades painted by other student groups, on the Howard County Courthouse Square this Friday, September 29, during the Kokomo Oktoberfest. Running 4–10 p.m., the free festival offers music and dancing to a Bavarian band, a Volkswagen Cruise-in, and vendors of crafts, farm produce, and German and American foods.
Students from the American Montessori Academy at Bona Vista Programs, Kinsey Youth Center, and Kokomo Academy also painted snowplow blades. The blades will be mounted onto city plows for the festival display. Mayor Matt McKillip will choose the winning entry and present a trophy to the top team.
The city plans to use the painted blades during the upcoming snowplowing season, according to Mike Ward, Director of Operations. “We wanted to recognize the students’ efforts and to beautify Kokomo during the winter months,” he said. And, it will add some fun rolling art to the streets until the elements wash away the environmentally friendly acrylic paint.
