Hoagy Carmichael Sculpture and Educational Tour on display at Indiana University Kokomo
September 13, 2007
Kokomo, IN—September 12, 2007—The Hoagy Carmichael Sculpture and Educational Tour will be on display in Alumni Hall at Indiana University Kokomo, September 22-26. The sculpture and display commemorates the life of one of Indiana’s most famous composers and one of IU’s most notable alumni. As an Indiana University student, Carmichael studied law, but his love was Jazz. His talent for music and composition enabled the world to enjoy such songs as “Heart and Soul”, “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening”, and “Georgia on My Mind”.
The focal point of the tour is the two-piece, life-size sculpture of Hoagy seated at a Steinway grand piano. The sculpture is accompanied by a comprehensive educational display on the life of this great songwriter. This includes videos, photographs, lyrics and other informational items. Created by Bloomington native artist, Michael McAuley, and fashioned from bronze, the statue will be placed on permanent display in Bloomington’s Peoples Park.
On the evening of Friday, September 21, a special concert featuring Bob and Pat Williams will be performed at 7 p.m. in IU Kokomo’s Kresge Auditorium. “Can’t Get Hoagy Off My Mind” will feature some of Carmichael’s best loved compositions. The concert is free and open to the public. Please contact the IU Kokomo Office of Alumni Relations at 765/455-9411 for your complimentary concert tickets.
