IU Kokomo Students Have the Answers at 2007 Indiana Black Expo

September 10, 2007

Kokomo, Indiana—July 22nd, Indiana University Kokomo was well represented at the 2007 Indiana Black Expo. Students Destiny Thompson, Chris Hayes, Vrinda Whitfield, Rosetta Fuller, April Jones, Ashanta Flynn, Benita Garner, Sonya Small, Clely Arzu, Tina Jones, and advisors Catherine Barnes and Gerry Stroman, distributed literature and answered questions about Indiana University.

Chris Hayes, a junior in Business Administration, observed that several cultures were “networking under one umbrella”, the Black Expo. The chance to meet other African American professionals attending the event empowered him and helped him realize that his career goals are attainable. Attending as a student of IU Kokomo and as an African American was both inspiring and humbling for Hayes. He was glad to be an ambassador of higher education to younger Expo attendees. Hayes said, “They can see themselves in me.”

This was the first Indiana Black Expo for Cleley Arzu, a senior Sociology major and a native of Guatemala. “It was grand,” she said, “there was so much cultural diversity.” Large numbers of African descendants who spoke languages from all around the world were present, and yet both students felt connected to all of them.

Indiana University Kokomo serves an 11 county area in north central Indiana. The campus offers more than 40 academic programs including four master’s degrees.
