Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

The Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology provides a broad coverage of modern scientific psychology. As a science, psychology seeks to understand the basic principles by which living organisms adapt their behavior to their changing physical and social environments.


Career Opportunities

Students who major in psychology may plan to pursue graduate work in psychology (in either applied or experimental areas) or desire careers that emphasize scientific training and quantitative skills. Students who major in psychology may also work in human service fields such as crisis intervention, in social services, or in business areas such as personnel or management. They also may pursue graduate education in areas such as social work, marriage and family counseling, or vocational counseling. Requirements (120 credit hours total)

General Education (64 credit hours)

Electives (19 credit hours)


Psychology Major (37 credit hours)

The following courses are required of all psychology majors (13 credit hours):

  • P103 General Psychology (3 credits; taken as part of general education)
  • P199 Planning Your Psychology Career (1 credit)
  • P211 Methods of Experimental Psychology (3 credits)
  • K300 Statistical Techniques (3 credits)
  • P457 Senior Seminar: Topics in Psychology (3 credits)
  • P459 History and Systems of Psychology (3 credits)

Students must choose one course from each of the following options (21 credit hours):

  • Two of the following four courses (6 credits):

    P319 Psychology of Personality
    P320 Social Psychology

    P324 Abnormal Psychology
    P303 Health Psychology

  • Two of the following three courses (6 credits):

    P325 Psychology of Learning

    P326 Behavioral Neuroscience
    P335 Cognitive Psychology

  • One of the following three courses (3 credits):

    P216 Lifespan Development
    P316 Psychology of Childhood and Adolescence
    B354 Adult Development & Aging

  • One of these two, two-semester courses (6 credits):

    P493 & P494 Supervised Research I & II
    P390 Helping Skills & P495 Practicum

  • Students must also take one psychology elective (3 credit hours).
