Meningitis

Indiana state law requires Indiana University to inform enrolled students of the risks associated with meningococcal disease and the benefits of immunization. All students registered at IU Kokomo must acknowledge they understand the risks of the bacterial infection meningitis by completing the electronic compliance form (requires an IU Network ID).

The American College Health Association (ACHA) recommends that students consider vaccination to reduce their risk for potentially fatal meningococcal disease. ACHA suggests the following students should be immunized:

  • Entering college students, particularly those living in dormitories or residence halls, who elect to decrease their risk for meningococcal disease.
  • Non-pregnant undergraduate students 25 years of age or under requesting vaccination in order to decrease their risk for disease.
  • Students with medical conditions that compromise immunity (e.g., HIV, absent spleen, antibody deficiency).
  • Students traveling to areas of the world where meningococcal disease is more common.

For more information on meningococcal meningitis, visit www.vaccineinformation.org

If you are interested in vaccination, contact your family physician. The cost of vaccination is approximately $100 (April 2005).

Alcohol and/or Drug Abuse Treatment Centers

Students who need help with alcohol or drug abuse are encouraged to seek help through the Office of Student Services and the Dean of Students. Students will be referred to an area alcohol or drug abuse treatment center. Most treatment centers offer free assessments and will work with your health insurance.
