Dr. Downey received her B.A. in Psychology with Highest Distinction from Purdue University, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She joined the IU Kokomo faculty in the fall of 2007; was promoted to Associate Professor and Chair of Psychology in 2013; assumed the role of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Student Success in 2016; became Professor of Psychology in 2018; and was Success in 2019.
Dr. Downey's primary focus is on improving student success and reducing equity gaps in student performance across the campus through onboarding programs, student outreach, and facilitating campus innovation in regards to student success. Accordingly, she oversees the Office of Student Success and Advising, New Student Orientation, New Student Convocation, the KEY Summer Institute (Summer Bridge) Program, the Academic Success Coaching program, and first year experience courses for the campus. She also collaborates with all other offices and departments on campus in regards to student success issues, and advocates for student needs and resources. These efforts connect to her disciplinary expertise in positive psychology, multicultural psychology, and clinical psychology, as well as her experience as a faculty member recognized for excellent teaching and student engagement.
