Biography

Angela M. Coppola, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Health Sciences and Director of the Applied and Community Research Center at Indiana University Kokomo. She joined the Division of Allied Health Sciences in August 2015. Dr. Coppola is also the Director of the Community Health and Activity Promotion Lab (CHAPL), leading several community-based participatory research projects with undergraduate students and state and county health departments and coalitions in the areas of healthy body image, eating, and physical activity practices of women and children. She teaches in the areas of Health Promotion and Exercise and Sport Science in the Division of Allied Health Sciences. Her approach to teaching and research is participatory, identifying mutually-beneficial outcomes for students and community partners. She has developed several service-learning and engagement techniques in her courses to achieve course objectives and applied learning and civic engagement goals. She was awarded the 2018 Academy Award in Community Engagement from the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching (FACET) at Indiana University for her service-learning in teaching. She has received internal and external grants to support her current projects exploring self-compassion, body pride, and health behaviors of women, as well as healthy eating and physical activity programs for children in early learning settings.

Dr. Coppola is an avid kayaker, enjoying time outdoors and on the lakes and rivers of the Midwest. In her spare time, she also enjoys hosting friends and family, traveling, reading, cooking, knitting, and spending time with her mini-poodle/“chiweenie” mix, Artie.

Are you an undergraduate student interested in a health promotion internship or research study as part of your Bachelor of Health Sciences degree? Specifically, do you have an interest in creating relationships and health-related programs with community members and organizations, and learning from community members in the process? There are opportunities for you to engage in research and internship projects that provide a space for these types of experiences.

The Community Health and Activity Promotion Lab (CHAPL) is coordinated by Dr. Angela M. Coppola, an Assistant Professor in the Division of Allied Health Sciences at Indiana University Kokomo. The purpose of this lab is to build community health and physical activity research and programming agendas with diverse communities in Indiana, providing an opportunity for students to engage in the development and implementation of health research and programs in the process. CHAPL values partnerships and relationship-building with community members to ensure relevant and respectful health-based research and programming. We have partnerships with early learning, school, and various state and local healthcare and service communities, including the Indiana State Department of Health. Thus, by engaging in CHAPL projects, students will have the opportunity to network with partners, build relationships and programs, and acquire the necessary research and communication skills to be a quality health promoter. One of the research students working on a CHAPL project won the 2018 IU Kokomo Student Research Symposium Presentation Award.
