It is with great pleasure that I welcome all of you to campus for this important celebration. I know I speak for the entire campus when I say we are excited about having Tom join our team.
I am blessed every day to work with an amazing group of people who are committed to student success. The campus continues to grow and prosper because of their dedication to student success, but more importantly because of our kinship culture grounded in caring and concern for one another. Tom will be a great addition to this team.
In the short time that I have known him, I have been impressed with his eye for service to our campus community – for example, he quickly noticed that we didn’t have anyone meeting our athletic team buses when they returned to campus late at night, so he made sure we did, so all the students got home safe.
I have been impressed with his ability to listen and discover the pulse of the campus and the officers he works with – he has tried to tap into their strengths and let them shine.
I have been impressed with his heart for people – when a perpetrator had been arrested in a case involving one of our students, a case he had not been involved with, he sought her out in between classes and made sure that she knew and let her know we were here for her.
My favorite poet is Maya Angelou, she once said, “I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I know that Tom will be a chief of police that will be remembered for how he made people feel and that resonates so well with our family culture at IU Kokomo. Welcome to our team, Tom.
