LGBTQ+ Alumni Association Emergency Scholarship

No student should have to make the choice between their education and living their lives openly and honestly.

Indiana University’s LGBTQ+ Alumni Association’s Emergency Scholarship is open to undergraduate students at all campuses to assist those students who face the loss of financial support when they make the courageous decision to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity to their families.

This unique form of funding is available for either the fall or the spring semester, to any full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student enrolled at any IU campus. Scholarships will be awarded to students based principally upon financial need, though career goals, community service, extracurriculars, and involvement in activities promoting diversity and raising awareness of the LGBTQ+ community and related issues may also be considered.  and applications have no deadline.

Prior to applying online, all applicants must contact the Office of Financial Aid to determine what other financial options are available, as well as the LGBTQ+ Center to discuss their financial situation.

Unless the student applicant elects to remain anonymous on the application form, all recipients must be willing to have their names, biographies and pictures published in various LGBTQ+ Alumni Association publications.

Awards are allocated on a semester basis, with a maximum award of $3,000 per semester. An individual student may not receive more than two scholarship awards, meaning that the maximum number of awards is two per student and the maximum amount payable to any one student is $6,000.

A scholarship application must be submitted for a semester only; an application for the entire academic year will not be considered. The number of emergency scholarships to be awarded for any semester will be pre-determined.

Having a center on campus for being part of the LGBTQ+ community is extremely amazing. As someone who never had the opportunity to be part of a group that accepted and held events for being LGBTQ+, these made me feel even more welcomed at IUK. Not to mention how much of a safe place the center is for me and other people who are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
