Minors

The American Identities minor facilitates deeper thought about how individual and group identities inform U.S. social, political, and historical perspectives about what it means to be an American. This minor is interdisciplinary and draws upon a rich array of courses relating to identity from various perspectives including race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, and region. Students will reflect on a wide range of identities to deconstruct what it means to be “American,” and learn how complex and competing definitions inform the cultural politics of this moment and others.

This minor provides students with the chance to take a wide variety of classes covering a broad range of historical topics; from sports history to Latin American history, the history of ancient Greece to the cultural history of the United States. Over their time in this program, students will gain an understanding of how different aspects of history connect together to build the modern world.

This minor will lead students to understand modern political practices in the United States. Beginning their studies with an introductory class, students will take courses focusing on political theory, international relations, the American presidency, foreign policy, environmental policy, and health policy. Students will also be eligible for a semester-long class that practices for and participates in the Indiana Model U.N.

This minor is designed for students who are interested in exploring the idea of law school, or who plan to attend law school, and are currently majoring in another subject. The curriculum for this minor provides students with a basic understanding of our society’s historical and political development, all while helping students develop essential reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking skills. Students will also get some experience with law directly, while taking courses from a variety of minors.

This minor provides the opportunity for students to explore the philosophical and theoretical foundations of a wide range of disciplines. Students examine ethical decision making, the nature of human thought processes, the creation of knowledge, and the use of logic. The minor provides courses that may be applied to all disciplines, but particularly complement pre-law, political science, communications, business, English, fine arts, sociology, and psychology. Students can also join the active Philosophy Club on campus.
